June Career Development SIG: Selling Yourself in Job Interviews

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Everyone agrees that a job interview is a selling situation. Selling a product or a service is much easier than selling ourselves. So, what is selling? What information do we need to know? What preparation is required? How do we include selling throughout the interview? This session answers these fundamental questions to get the right job in the right company.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Understand how to sell yourself
• Positively differentiate yourself from other candidates
• Gain skills and confidence for successful hiring interviews
  
  

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Walt retired in 2012 from an information technology career spanning 38 years. He spent 25 years with Electronic Data Systems in a wide variety of roles including systems engineer, financial analyst, leadership training and development, and account manager roles. Walt’s industry experience includes financial, retail, manufacturing, state government and education. His last role was as a member of a special “Megadeal” team winning accounts greater than $1 billion in revenue.

Walt founded the free Interview Success Workshop in 2000 and currently volunteers as an Interview Success Coach and member of the Practice Interview Team (PIT Crew). Job seekers gain knowledge and skills learning how to sell themselves and to positively differentiate themselves from other candidates. He has coached over 1,000 candidates and often speaks to groups about a variety of interviewing topics.

Walt has an MBA from the University of Florida. He is a Vietnam veteran and served as an officer in the U.S Army.
