What is a GIG (Geographical Interest Group) Lunch Meet-Up?

The ATD Dallas Chapter is creating more casual, connection-first networking opportunities across Dallas and our surrounding suburban areas. GIG Lunch Meet-Ups expand on the lunch gatherings we’ve offered in the past and allow us to host multiple lunches each month in different locations—making it easier for members to connect close to where they live or work.

Join us at a local lunch spot to enjoy good food and great conversation with members of the ATD Dallas community. This is a free event for ATD Dallas members (each attendee pays for their own lunch).

WHO CAN REGISTER

● The study group is open to anyone, anywhere who is interested in pursuing the CPTD certification.

● International participants are welcome.

● ATD or ATD Chapter membership is not required, but ATD partner chapters receive discounted pricing on registration for the full cohort. Is your chapter a partner chapter?

Most development tools are designed with primarily linear content in mind. It's often possible to create nonlinear or branching content, but that isn't the primary purpose of the tool. That means building branching scenarios can be clunky, cumbersome, and time consuming. What if you had a tool that was designed just for creating branching scenarios?

In this presentation, you'll learn how to build branching scenarios with Twine. Twine is a free, open-source tool designed specifically for creating interactive stories and games. You can use Twine for planning and writing a scenario, creating functional rapid prototypes, or for more polished final products. We’ll start with a live demo of building a simple branching scenario from scratch so you can see how quickly you can publish a functional learning experience. Next, you’ll see how story formats can add functionality and change the appearance of a story. You’ll see ways Twine can be used for different types of scenarios, such as games and chat simulations, and how to enhance and customize scenarios in Twine.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

Describe why Twine is an effective tool for creating branching scenarios quickly.
Create and publish a story in Twine.
Identify ways Twine can be used for different types of interactive stories and scenarios.
Compare use cases for different Twine story formats.

Christy Tucker is a learning experience design consultant with over 20 years of experience helping people learn. Specializing in scenario-based learning, she helps engage audiences and promote skill transfer to real-world environments. She also focuses on practical applications of AI to support and enhance learning. Her clients have ranged from Fortune 500 companies and small businesses to nonprofit associations, state and local government agencies, and universities. Christy blogs about instructional design and elearning and speaks regularly at industry conferences and events.
